The Internet of Things (IoT)

The Internet of things (IoT) is the network of physical devices, home appliances and other objects embedded with electronics, software, sensors and actuators. The network connectivity allows these objects to connect and exchange data with each other.

IoT will fundamentally change the way a wide range of manufacturing systems, industries processes and products are developed, tested and maintained. Dr. John Barrett, Head of Academic Studies at the Nimbus Centre for Embedded Systems Research, explains the Internet of things.

Many manufacturing systems are not ready yet to use big data due to the lack of smart analytic tools. This emerging trend is called the Industry 4.0 (What is industry 4.0?) and fourth industrial revolution. Industry 4.0 relates to industrial manufacturing and refers to the fourth industrial revolution. Industry 4.0 was first used in Germany in a survey about research and development in 2012. The picture shows the Industrial revolution stages from steam power to cyber physical systems, automation and internet of things.
